YUKON!!! The True North Strong & Free

So the questions of the day for December all focus around one of the greatest places in our country, the Yukon Territory! Which also happens to be where I am from :)

It is a place that is so rich in history, and geography that I thought it would be fun for the kids to learn about the True North and the impact it had on shaping our great Country, such as the North West Mounted Patrol which is today known as the RCMP. Plus it is just a cool place. (no pun intended lol)

So parents don't be afraid to ask your kids about the questions or you can even work together with them at home to answer them!!! Have Fun!

Vocabulary Quiz!!! Social Studies

There will be a Vocabulary quiz on the current events terms for the Hurricane & Climate Change news story this Wednesday Dec 13th. Parents you can practice at home with your kids on line using the quizlets website. The students all know how to generate a test to practice, also the have on line flash cards they created to assist them with studying the terms.

Students don't be afraid to test your parents either :) Have Fun with it!!!

HPEC: Basketball presentation

Just wanted to say thank you to the H.P.E.C council for asking me to present last night at their drive in workshop. Also to those of you who attended my basketball session,  I will be forwarding a copy of the drills and games to Dustin to distribute. I hope you enjoyed the session, and got at least one thing out of it that you can bring back to your school, I know I did ;)

Good Morning!!!

In the works today, Finish off the Hobbit novel, and start the original movie on Monday. We will also be looking at a political cartoon about the Northern Gateway Pipeline form our current events. We will be having a quiz on this information on Friday morning. 

This Friday we will be having our current events quiz in the morning and then walking over to the bowling alley to bowl a few frames:)   The next two Fridays after that we will continue to attend the Power of Youth.

Good Morning Everyone,

Today we will be heading over to the Power of Youth. We also only have two more chapters to go in the Hobbit and then we are finished. The movie is being releases in Dec some time, and we are making plans to try and see if we can go for a afternoon viewing possibly. More to come on this in the near future.

Basketball action tonight as our RDC Kings play the Kings University of Edmonton, Tip Off at 8pm come one out and watch should be a good one!!!

RDC KINGS Basketball!!

So just an update the Kings Basketball team has taken the top spot in Canada we have clinched the Number  #1 ranking for all colleges in Canada. Way to go go guys, all the hard work is paying off, lets keep it up! Tonight we play SAIT in Calgary and Saturday night we play SAIT again at home, so come on out and watch if you can.

Any Venture Students and parents who would like to come out and watch just let me know and I can arrange that. Always great to have your support

RDC Kings basketball win on the weekend !!!

Good morning everyone,

I had an exciting weekend as on Saturday night I was promoted to head coach of the Kings Basketball team for the night. We played the Agustana Vikings in Camrose and the guys made me look great on my 2012 coaching debut as we picked up another win, and remain undefeated on the season. We are also currently ranked the number two team in the country for Men's College Basketball.

Next games are this Thursday in Calgary and Saturday night at home in Red Deer against SAIT. Really appreciate the support form the students who come out to watch, and cheer us on. Specially Calvin who hasn't missed a game in Red Deer.

Well one more week done, and One more week closer to December! Everyone is working very hard and things are humming along. We had a great day at the Power of Youth Centre today, and than supporting Central Middle at the afternoon Pep Rally. GO CYCLONES!!!

Question Of The Day!!!

Good Morning Everyone,

Today we will be starting a new activity in the Ventures room, it is called the question of the day! Everyday in the morning a new question will be posted, and the students need to reply to the question on the blog by posting a comment. The student will make use the IPads or computers to post their reply / answer.

If students keep on top of this and successfully answer 75% of the questions in a month they will be able to participate in a special class lunch on a selected day at the end of the month. The questions will be an extension of learning, and related to curriculum with a fun one thrown in on one of the days. All answers will be reviewed by Mr. Smith before being posted.  The Question Of The Day tab can be found at the top of the blog.

Check it OUT!!!

Below is one of the monsters a student made in class for one of our science projects. The kids did an Awesome job. The Art teacher Mr Coghlin liked them so much he even borrowed one to show his class, and is going to add it to their curriculum!!! Way to go guys!

Well it is the day, hopefully no one gets to big of a sugar rush today / tonight!

Our monsters have been coming along nicely and the finishing touches are being put on them. Here is one of them, not sure of the name at the moment but it will be coming today.

Almost made it to Halloween! Our monsters are almost done should be posting new pics and have our critters up for October 31st. The students are really working hard to get them done. This Monday is the Fall Dance, it runs from 2pm until 4:30pm tickets are $4 dollars and can be paid in class to Mr. Smith.

FYI Red Deer College Kings basketball is in action tonight wit hour home opener against Grant MacEwan University. Its gonna be a great game so come on out and support us.

Hey Everybody, Last day of the week for students

Just wanted to let everyone know that this weekend there is an assignment going home to be completed for Monday. This is for the students Novel Study, they are to use the Internet and other sources of media and technology to research different races, and types of characters found in the Hobbit Novel.

Also there are some forms being brought home fir the parents:

2) Parent Teacher conferences information

3) Consent form for Ventures to be filled out and returned to Mr. Smith Monday AM

The Monsters are Coming!!!

So in preparation for Halloween we have decided to start a new project where the students will be combining some of their classes and curriculum in to a collaborative project. We are creating MONSTERS. That's right each student has started to create their own unique monster, and will have complimentary assignments in Science and Language Arts to complete as a part of this process.

The student seem very excited about this so please ask them questions and stay tuned to the blog for more updates, as we plan to document the process of bringing these creatures to life :)

This is one pic of the creation of a sea creature that will soon be brought to life. The tools used to start this process are a simple garbage can, coffee tin and some packing tape, and one students imagination!!! watch for more to come soon...

HOBBIT NOVEL STUDY!!!

Hey Everyone,

Today we are starting the novel the HOBBIT by JR Tolkien. We will be doing various activities with the students through out this time and, when the novel is finished we plan on watching the original animated film version, with the hopes of seeing the new 2012 version later when it is released.

Khan Academy Website

Parents, just to keep everyone in the loop ask your kids about what we are doing with math in the Ventures room. We have started a test drive of the Khan Academy Website. From here they can practise math concepts they are learning in class and get extra practise while having fun. They are able to work towards certain goals for each concept and gain on line rewards for their accomplishments. They can access this from home also!

Quizlet !!! A great online learning tool!

Good Morning Everyone,

I just heard of a great on line learning tool we will be trying out today in class, it is the Quizlet website. Here we will be using it for now to assist the students with creating vocabulary lists from their various subjects. Its a great tool and parents it also allows you to check and see some of the work your kids are doing, and can even participate with them at home. From here you can spend a few minutes going through vocabulary flash cards with your kids and if they didn't do their chores you can even create an on line test at the click of a button lol. It is very easy so join in the learning with your kids so just ask them, or me. Have some fun with it.

Literacy Class / Reading Material

Good Morning Everyone,

We are currently running a literacy class where the students will have the opportunity to read many and varied texts. Some texts will be self selected, and should be at a level which the the student can comfortably read on their own to allow for practise and integrate strategies learnt in Language Arts. I would encourage you to talk with your children and assist them with the selection of reading material.

Terry Fox Run

Central Middle School will be participating in the Terry Fox Run on October 15th. Students may drop off toonies to their home room class to help support the fundraiser.

Awesome First Day

Hi everybody! Just wanted to say we had a great first day in Ventures, here are a few things to think about for tomorrow.

Students please remember what your options classes are that we got you signed up for today. Also would be a good idea to have a change of clothes for your physed classes handy.

Reminder that if you need a bus pass you can get them in the office before school, after school or at lunch.

Anbody coming out for the cross country running team we have our first practice tomorrow, meet outside Mrs. Adams room at 3:05pm it is upstairs room #208. Remember you need to sign in and out when we goo for the run.

Welcome Back To School!!!

Hello everyone, I wanted to take a brief moment to welcome everybody to the 2012 /13 school year. My name is Mr. Smith and I will be the new Ventures Teacher for the upcoming school year. I very excited for the year to get started and look foward to find out how every ones summer went.

On another note we have some exciting news as we have moved classrooms, we are now located in room #103 downstairs. The room is much bigger and a great space for all of us to collaborate in. Also returning is Mrs Wilson who is very excited to see every one, and we have a new face in the program in Mrs. Beal, who's is looking forward to meeting everyone this next week.

My plan for this year is to incorporate this blog along with some other technology that will provide another means of communicating with the students, and parents of the Ventures Program here at Central Middle School.
